Leading the Medical Device Industry with Department of Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that applies the principles and technologies of mechanical and electronic engineering to the medical and health industries.
The Department addresses medical problems using engineering methods, representing a key area of multidisciplinary and convergent studies. As society ages and the demand for health longevity increases, there is a growing need for a new medical field centered on preventive care.
This shift is leading to the reorganization of traditional healthcare into a new system focused on personalized prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management. With the rapid growth expected in the medical engineering field, the Department of Biomedical Engineering was established at Soonchunhyang University in 2017.
The Department leverages the university's accumulated experience in medical services and medical device technology to train biomedical engineering experts who will lead future innovations in the healthcare industry.
To achieve this, our department offers a curriculum that emphasizes both theoretical and practical knowledge. Integrating basic theories with new technologies such as IoT, AI, and data science, the course is set out to make it suitable for the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
We provide hands-on education that merges theory with practice, ensuring that students are prepared to actively engage in their fields upon graduation.
Since 2017, Korea has designated the biohealth industry as one of the five new industries, and in 2020, it was selected as one of the three major focus industries alongside system semiconductors and future vehicles.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering aims to produce empathetic and creative talents who will lead the advanced biomedical industry of the future. This requires a strong foundation in fundamental sciences such as medicine, biology, physics, and mathematics.
This also includes an interest in mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer science, which are essential for medical system design.
The medical device and healthcare device technology sectors are highly competitive globally. Therefore, our department focuses on developing engineering thinkers with creativity, communication, and collaboration skills to identify and develop leading technologies.
Students can obtain various electronic/mechanical engineering-related certifications, including the following: Medical Device Technician, Electronic Engineer, Mechatronics Engineer, Electronic CAD Engineer, General Mechanical Engineer, etc.Considering the expanding medical device market and the increasing regulatory oversight in advanced countries, we also offer training for the nationally accredited Medical Device Regulatory Science Specialist certification, established in 2018.
Graduates can pursue careers in hospital medical engineering departments or as hardware/software development engineers in medical device companies. They can also become medical regulatory science specialists by obtaining the Medical Device RA Specialist certification, recognized since 2018.Graduates may additionally enter technical sales roles within the healthcare industry, leveraging their understanding of medical devices Despite the job market challenges due to COVID-19, the first graduates in February 2021 achieved an employment rate of 83.3% by September 2021, securing positions in medical device development and as medical regulatory science specialists.
